Higher interest rate painful for borrowers but necessary to control inflation - Cardoso

Higher interest rate painful for borrowers but necessary to control inflation - Cardoso

The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso, has said that the decision to raise the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) to 27.25 percent is a bold move.

According to him, higher interest rates, “while painful for borrowers, are necessary to curb excess money in circulation and control inflation.”

He noted that leadership is about making hard choices to secure long-term stability over short-term comfort “in moments like these.”

Cardoso spoke in Lagos at the weekend while addressing members of the Harvard Club of Nigeria on the topic ‘Leadership in Challenging Times: Restoring Credibility, Building Trust and Containing Inflation.’

He also said the CBN’s decision to implement the Electronic Foreign Exchange Matching System (EFEMS) was rooted in the understanding that trust is essential to central banking. He said this was to enhance transparency and provide more accurate oversight of foreign exchange transactions.

He said: “Trust is the currency of central banking. If the public loses trust in the institution, the efficacy of its policies diminishes.

"Our decision to implement the Electronic Foreign Exchange Matching System (EFEMS) is rooted in this understanding.

“By enhancing transparency and providing more accurate oversight of forex transactions, we send a strong signal that the CBN is serious about fair and efficient markets."

Cardoso stated that leadership, especially as the head of a central bank, often requires making difficult and sometimes unpopular decisions. He emphasised that the bank is a listening institution, unafraid to reconsider decisions if they fail to meet its original objectives.

“In the face of economic challenges, it is imperative to focus on core objectives—restoring the credibility of the institution, building trust in the financial system, and, most critically, containing inflation. These are not just strategic goals; they are foundational to any meaningful recovery,” he said.

While noting that containing inflation remained the bank’s core mission, he acknowledged that the CBN was yet to meet its target. However, he said that recent declines reported by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) in July and August 2024 showed that the CBN was moving in the right direction.

Woman dumps her groom-to-be for her maid of honour

Woman dumps her groom-to-be for her maid of honour

A woman dumped her groom-to-be and is now married to her maid of honour and she says it was the best decision she’s ever made.

Kayla Doody, 29, from Florida, got engaged to Erika, 36, just six months after ending things with her groom-to-be and shortly after Erika divorced her husband.

The Sun reports that she explained that, growing up in Houston, Texas, she was bullied at school because of her appearance and quiet, quirky personality.

Kayla said, "I never felt like I fitted in. While I dated boys and even kissed a few girls to try to get attention from boys, none of it was serious. My self-esteem was so low that I didn’t think I was good enough to be loved by anyone.

"I met Harry (not real name) in September 2013, aged 18, when I started university in Houston. Like me, he was shy and quiet. For years, we were friends, hanging around with the same group, but over time we grew closer, and in 2018 we became a couple.

"I felt settled and comfortable, but I knew in my heart I wasn’t madly in love with Harry. It felt more like companionship than what my friends had – they were so passionate about their partners. I didn’t feel jealous, though, as I still had low self-worth and I was just grateful for what I had – a man who loved me, even if I didn’t feel quite the same way about him.

"Working as a personal trainer in December 2021, I became friends with a client, Dan (not his real name), and in November 2022 met his wife Erika.

"Within months, Erika and I were best friends, messaging daily and hanging out as a foursome with our partners.

"In February 2023, I was out hiking with Harry when he proposed to me, dropping to one knee at the top of a rocky mountain and presenting me with a ring.

"It was a surreal and confusing moment. I cared for Harry and I’d always wanted to be a bride, to have a special day where everyone could see that I had been chosen. But, at the same time, I felt stuck, like Harry was my only option. I was smiling as I said ‘yes’, but inside I felt trapped, as if I was just making the best of things.

"Erika was so happy for me, and revealed she’d helped Harry plan the proposal. I asked her to be my maid of honour and she agreed.

"In late August, Erika and I were driving to my family home for a party, when she confessed to me that she’d kissed a woman. She’d realized she was gay and wanted a divorce from Dan. My head was spinning. I was immediately jealous of this other woman, and suddenly realised I had feelings for Erika. I tried to push those feelings away.

"However, after that conversation, there was a spark that hadn’t been there before. We kept making flirty jokes, and when we looked at each other it felt electric. I made excuses not to be intimate with Harry. I realized I was in love – but not with my husband-to-be.

"At the end of September, I nervously drove to Erika’s house. Dan was away with work for several months, and I just knew something was about to happen. As we sat on the sofa watching a movie, Erika kissed me. It felt magical. I didn’t feel guilty about Harry or Dan, all I could think about was Erika.

"We slept together for the first time a week later, and I knew she was The One – and that I couldn’t possibly marry Harry in three weeks’ time.

"My heart was thumping. When I confessed I was in love with Erika and we wanted to be together, Harry was stunned and angry, but also appeared deflated, as if he knew there was no point trying to salvage our relationship. I hated hurting him, but walking away, my biggest emotion was relief.

"We haven’t spoken since that final conversation. I sent a short text to guests saying the wedding was cancelled, and thankfully, no one asked any questions.

"I told my mom in person that the wedding was off, and she was so supportive – she told me to follow my heart and helped me cancel the venue and suppliers.

" The date for my wedding came and went, and I felt relieved I hadn’t gone through with it. Now I was experiencing true love with Erika, I knew I should never have settled for companionship.

“When Dan returned from his extended work trip in November, Erika told him that we were together. He was devastated, but agreed to the divorce.”

Erika recounted meeting Dan at a young age and being married to him for years only to realise she loved Kayla when they met.

Erika said: “I met Dan at university, aged 22. Kind and handsome, he proposed in April 2011, we got married in December 2012, and for years were happy together.

"But by 2021, when I first met Kayla, we were already drifting apart. Kayla was bubbly and friendly and, at first, I just wanted to be friends.

"But by the time Harry asked for my help with his proposal in January 2023, I’d developed a serious crush on her. My jealousy grew as I helped plan her wedding. When Kayla tried on her dress, she looked so beautiful I had to control my face, worried she would see how I really felt.

“Then, that August, I got very drunk and kissed a woman. It felt like I was meeting myself for the first time. I knew I was gay and my marriage had to end. I was so nervous telling Kayla, but after that, the spark between us was undeniable.”

Kayla said: “Once she told Harry and cancelled their wedding, and I told Dan, I felt like I could breathe again. I never wanted to hurt Dan, but I couldn’t live a lie. Two months later, we were divorced.”

In January, with her divorce complete, Erika proposed and Kayla said “yes”.

“I meant it with all my heart. We tied the knot in April at an intimate wedding venue filled with flowers, in front of 60 of our family and friends,” Kayla said. "Exchanging vows, I knew I was marrying my soulmate. I had no regrets, we were meant to be.

“We now live in Florida and are blissfully happy and planning to have IVF and start a family.”

Kayla said she has started writing a memoir about her journey.

Celine Dion's doctor explains what happened to the singer after she suffered muscle stiffness and painful spasms on camera

Multiple award-winning singer, Céline Dion has been living with symptoms of stiff person syndrome for 17 years, a new documentary, "I Am: Céline Dion," has revealed.

Detailing her life with the condition, her physician Dr. Amanda Piquet, director of the autoimmune neurology program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine Anschutz Medical Campus, revealed what really goes on with the singer when she suffers from the illness.

In one scene from the documentary, Dion was having a physical therapy session shortly after viewers see her recording a new song, "Love Again."

She's going through what appear to be standard exercises with her physical therapist, part of her treatment efforts to improve her health and hopefully perform again.

Then, she starts to experience cramping in one of her legs, and within minutes, her whole body is tensed up to the point where she cannot speak, move or even change her facial expression, as she winces in pain.

As her medial crisis continues, she sheds tears.

Her doctor then asks her to squeeze his hand if she can hear him. She remains motionless and curled up, but finds a way to show him that she's aware of what's happening to her.

During the scene, Dion receives a benzodiazepine nasal spray, Dr. Amanda Piquet, says it part of a class of depressant drugs that relieve anxiety and reduce muscle spasms.

Piquet says, "That anxiety, that panic, that continued spasm that was not breaking then very quickly triggered just a complete whole body spasm.”

"It's not a seizure," Piquet clarifies. "This is a spasm that is occurring, and patients are aware of what's going on. There's a lot of anxiety, there's a lot of panic, your adrenaline's rushing."

The film's director, Irene Taylor, recalled what it was like to witness this scene

"It was the most extraordinarily uncomfortable moment in my life, as a filmmaker but also as a mother, as a fellow human, because I didn’t know what was happening," Taylor said to TODAY's Hoda Kotb.

“I had this uncertainty whether to keep filming or not. But (Céline) gave me the strength to just keep going. We had been filming together for many months at that point, so she had really trained me, 'Just keep going. If I have to stop you, I’ll stop you.'”

"Her body was enduring something that was unimaginable, and I wasn’t sure if she was aware of it," Taylor continued. "I wasn’t sure if she was going to survive it. It’s really hard to even sit next to her and talk out loud about it because it was very intense."
